It makes sense that Shinola just announced its opening of another Michigan store in Ann Arbor: its products are quality, and are built to last. The store is known for its watches, leather goods, bicycles and journals. In fact, the paper in the journals is made by Edwards Brothers Malloy, right in Ann Arbor, and Shinola is quickly gaining a national reputation for its products. For the Detroit or Michigan enthusiast in your life, check out City Bird, a shop that specializes in all things local. It's run by two University of Michigan graduates, Andy and Emily Linn, and the store was opened in November 2009. In December 2011, Nest opened next door, which sells housewares and various gifts. City Bird is a great place to shop for prints, notebooks and other small gifts for "him," and you can also check out its Etsy shop online.

The store hosts Magic: the Gathering meet-ups, and sells all related merchandise, as well as board games, comics and miniatures. The store specializes in Magic: the Gathering singles and sealed products, and also has Yu-Gi-Oh and Kaijudo, deck building games, and gaming sleeves, binders and deck boxes. The Detroit Mercantile Co. is located in Eastern Market and has a selection of "Made in the USA" items from Detroit, the state of Michigan and all of America. For men, it carries Carhartt products, denim, ties, Detroit apparel/books and more. The store is owned by three owners who have lived in other states than Michigan, but find themselves drawn back to the state. One of them, Robert Stanzler, also created the original "Made in Detroit" logo, and is a fourth-generation Detroiter. Detroit Mercantile Co. products can also be bought on its website.
