Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Perhaps you still need a gift for your mother or special female in your life? Check out this list for the best non-chain stores around where you can buy unique gifts she will surely cherish for a long time.
The Rust Belt Market
22801 Woodward Ave.
Ferndale, MI 48220
www.rustbeltmarket.com

The Rust Belt Market is located at the prime location of 9 Mile Road and Woodward, in Ferndale, and is an eclectic mix of many merchants. It’s only open on the weekends: 2 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The market opened in 2011, and even has space for events, such as wedding receptions, parties and more. Before you go, you can check out profiles of the merchants that rent space there, too.

Michigan By the Bottle Tasting Room
29932 Woodward Ave.
Royal Oak, MI 48073
(248) 850-7175
mbtbtasting.com

Michigan By the Bottle Tasting Room has two locations: one in Royal Oak, on Woodward, and another in Shelby Township; they will also be opening an Auburn Hills location soon. Wine can be bought by the flight or the bottle here, and all of the wines in-house are Michigan-made — they even have hard ciders, too. Pick up a nice bottle of wine for mom or perhaps enroll her in MBBT’s Sipper Club, where she can get six bottles of wine twice annually or twelve bottles (two choices to choose from). The store also has gift cards, if you want to go with her and perhaps choose a bottle of wine together at some point.

Shinola
441 W. Canfield St.
Detroit, MI 48201
(313) 285-2390
www.shinola.com

Shinola is practically a Detroit tradition by now, so if you have the cash, perhaps splurge on a nice watch for your mother. If one of their watches (most of which start at $500 or more) is out of the budget, then check out the store’s selection of leather items, such as Shinola’s wallets, journals, backpacks/bags and accessories. Shinola also has a location in downtown Ann Arbor, if that’s closer, and you can shop online as well.

Catching Fireflies has stores in both downtown Rochester and downtown Berkley, and the store is known for having interesting and unique gifts. The store has everything from socks, to clocks, to jewelry, and you will be certain to find a gift for mom or a special lady in your life there. Leon & Lulu
96 W. 14 Mile Road
Clawson, MI 48017
(248) 288-3600
www.leonandlulu.com

Leon & Lulu is located in downtown Clawson, near Main St. and 14 Mile, and the store used to be a roller rink; since then, Leon & Lulu have taken it over and made it its own. The store sells home decor as well as furniture and gifts, and would be an ideal stop if you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift. Leon & Lulu has recently purchased the Clawson Theater next door, too, and plans to keep its facade as a movie theater (the last movie was shown in 1962), as well as adding a bakery and coffee shop, and more retail space.
