Mashed potatoes aren't just for Thanksgiving. This creamy stick-to-your-ribs side is great on any cool night. So if you have a craving for some great mashed potatoes we got you covered. Check this list for the most unique dishes in the Metro Detroit area.

Slows Bar-Bq
2138 Michigan Ave.
Detroit, MI 48216
(313) 962-9828
www.slowsbarbq.com

Slows is well known downtown for its fabulous pulled pork, ribs and other barbecued delights. It features such side dishes as waffle fries with cheddar cheese and your standards - baked beans, coleslaw, cornbread - but it also has "sweet potato mash" that you can order. Think regular mashed potatoes with a twist - it's a mashed sweet potato instead. You can add sweet potato mash to any dish for $2.25, and if you order an entree or combo dish, all of them come complete with two sides, so you may include it as one of those.

Commonwealth
300 Hamilton Row
Birmingham, MI 48009
(248) 792-9766
www.gocommonwealth.com

Commonwealth might be known as a brunch and breakfast venue, but it has something rather unique: sweet potato hash. One might think that sweet potato hash is more like hash browns, but Commonwealth serves its potatoes chopped up with other potatoes (non-sweet) and veggies such as onions and peppers. It's included with some of its dishes, such as the common breakfast, or you can order it on the side for an additional charge. Commonwealth is located in downtown Birmingham.

The Rattlesnake Club
300 River Place Drive
Detroit, MI 48207
(313) 567-4400
www.rattlesnakedetroit.com

The Rattlesnake Club is an upscale restaurant close to the Detroit River. It has crispy/garlic smashed potatoes on its menu, but if you order the pecan and gorgonzola crusted filet of beef ($36) for dinner, it comes with sweet potato gratin as one of the sides, gratin being potatoes topped with browned crust. Potatoes au gratin is common, but sweet potato gratin is not, which makes the Rattlesnake Club's dish one of the more interesting in the Detroit area.

Cadieux Cafe
4300 Cadieux Road
Detroit, MI 48224
(313) 882-8560
www.cadieuxcafe.com

The Cadieux Cafe, located in Detroit near Grosse Pointe, serves spinach mashed potatoes ($2.95 for an individual side, or comes with meals), which is one of its signature side dishes. The restaurant mixes the potatoes with spinach and "special seasonings" to create a unique dish. Cadieux Cafe is a Belgian restaurant, and you can also find sides such as pomfrites (fries with dipping sauce) and Belgian beer stew if you're not in the mood for mashed potatoes. Check out the mashed potato dish if you are a spinach fan looking to try something new.

Union Woodshop
18 S. Main St.
Clarkston, MI 48346
(248) 625-5660
www.unionwoodshop.com

Union Woodshop is known for what it calls "big-time smalltown BBQ." It has everything from spare ribs to pulled pork, and tons of sides to boot, including a sweet potato mash with "charred jalapeno and Michigan maple syrup." The jalapenos in the sweet potatoes give it a bit of spice, and the syrup balances out the flavoring to add a little sweetness to the concoction. If your dining companions aren't potato fans, they can choose sides ranging from collard greens with house smoked bacon, to BBQ baked beans to Union mac and cheese - and that's only a handful of the choices available. Union Woodshop can be found on Main Street in downtown Clarkston.
