Daily Covid-19 Minute: Breakthrough InfectionsThe CDC has found it very unlikely you’ll get sick with Covid-19 once you are fully vaccinated. 77 million Americans who were fully vaccinated were looked at and 5800 went on to later develop covid. That’s an infection rate of .007 %. Of those who became sick 65% of them were women, and just over 40% were age 60 and older. These cases, known as breakthrough infections, are expected with any vaccine because no vaccine is 100% effective. But these numbers suggest a vaccine efficacy rate upwards of 95%. Plus, nearly a third of those infected were asymptomatic. That’s a sign that the vaccine could reduce the severity of the illness.

Daily Covid-19 Minute: Pfizer BoosterA booster shot of the Covid-19 vaccine could be required within 12 months of your first dose according to Pfizer’s CEO, Albert Bourla. The CEO said it’s likely we will need to be vaccinated annually against covid, much like the flu. The main concern is the emergence of variants that could escape our immune system. Researchers have been studying how long the vaccines work against coronavirus and to date have proven at least six months of protection. However, only time will tell if this lasts longer. Both Pfizer and Moderna are actively following vaccinated patients to see how long protection lasts. One positive sign is patients who were infected with SARS back in 2003 had sufficient antibody levels for up to 3 year

Daily Covid-19 Minute: Signs of A Blood ClotThe headlines about the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been everywhere so it’s important to know the signs of a blood clot you should be on the lookout for. Typically, when we think of blood clots, we’re talking about the ones that come from our legs, they form there. They have symptoms like swelling or pain in your leg, red or discolored skin over the area, and a feeling of warmth. With this type of blood clot, it travels up into your lungs and can be dangerous. It will cause shortness of breath, rapid pulse, and difficulty breathing. All of these are signs you need to go to an emergency room immediately. With the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, officials are concerned about a different kind of blood clot. This clot forms in your brain so the symptoms are different too. These symptoms include severe headache, blurry vision, fainting, trouble speaking, and seizures. Remember, the likelihood of having one of these blood clots after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is extremely rare, like one in a million, but if something seems seriously off and you just received your Johnson & Johnson shot within the last couple of weeks, make sure to call your doctor.

Daily Covid-19 Minute: Regeneron Antibody StudyFor months it’s been known that antibody cocktails reduced the likelihood of getting seriously sick if given to high-risk covid patients. Now researchers are learning they might also be useful at preventing covid infections from the beginning. In a new phase 3 trial, household contacts of infected covid patients were given an antibody cocktail from the company Regeneron. Researchers found people who received this drug were 81% less likely to develop an asymptomatic case of covid later on. Additionally, this antibody cocktail was administered subcutaneously, right under the skin. This is much less invasive than the intravenous route that has been used in the past. This could be a game-changer for high-risk people who haven’t yet been vaccinated and may also have potential in those who are immunosuppressed and less likely to respond well to vaccines.

Daily Covid-19 Minute: Covid Mental Health IllnessThere’s more being learned about the long-term consequences of Covid-19 after a new study has found that nearly 1 in 3 covid patients develop some form of mental health illness in the six months following their initial viral infection. Researchers looked at over 200,000 covid patients, evaluating if they were subsequently diagnosed with a wide range of neurological and psychiatric conditions. The most common diagnosis was anxiety, found in 17% of Covid-19 patients, followed by mood disorders, found in 14% of patients. Researchers found hospitalized patients aren’t the only ones developing these conditions; instead affecting all covid patients. Researchers also compared how frequently brain disease was occurring after covid versus other respiratory infections like the flu for various neurological conditions and it was unfortunately higher with Covid-19.
