State House Speaker Andy Dillon has announced that former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer is endorsing his run for Michigan governor.Dillon’s campaign said in a release that he also is expected to talk Monday morning in Campus Martius about his plans to increase the number of jobs in the state, improve the economy and the education system, revitalize cities, reform government and spur clean energy.

Dillon lives in Redford Township, just outside Detroit. He is facing Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero for the Democratic Party’s nomination. They are trying to woo voters in Detroit, a majority-black city that’s a stronghold for Democratic votes.

U.S. Reps. John Conyers and Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick threw their support Saturday to Bernero.

On the Republican side, WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports businessman Rick Snyder, one of five candidates for Governor, has won the endorsement of former presidential candidate John McCain and former congressman Joe Swartz, who mounted an unsuccessful campaign for governor as an independent.

Snyder’s campaign would not confirm the McCain endorsement and called it “speculation.”

The primary election is August 3rd.
