DPS Summer Program Highlighted

An open house and forum are showcasing the partnership between Detroit's public schools and a Boston-based nonprofit specializing in after-school and summer learning.

Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL) says in a release that Tuesday's program at Parker Elementary will demonstrate how the Detroit district is becoming a model for summer education.

Detroit has hired teachers and teachers assistants for kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms as part of the six-week program. About 3,000 students are in the program, which is designed to close the learning gap in urban education.

BELL works with about 10,000 children each year in public schools in Augusta, Ga.; Baltimore; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit; New York City; and Springfield, Mass.
