4 Charged In Detroit Schools Theft Probe
Authorities Tuesday announced charges against four people accused of stealing money from Detroit schools to pay for a mortgage, furnace, home improvements and personal items.
The district's financial manager, Robert Bobb, says investigators continue to find a "den of thieves.''
"Several weeks ago, I said 'We have a mini-cesspool of corruption. As we dig deeper into some of these cases -- now we have a major cesspool of corruption by some of our employees," Bobb said.
The defendants include Gwendolyn Miller, former principal of Randolph Career and Technical Center, who is accused of embezzling $1,400. The school's ex-accountant, Eugenia Holimon, is accused of making mortgage payments with district money and helping a friend purchase items at Home Depot and Lowe's.
Holimon's son also is charged. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says nearly $150,000 was stolen.
Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday for Miller and Holimon.
