In Dearborn, A Vacant Building Is A New Health Care Center

Less than two years after breaking ground, officials from Oakwood Healthcare Inc., Midwest Medical Center and Redico Development Co., together with local dignitaries, Wednesday celebrated the grand opening of the Midwest Medical Center at 4700 Schaefer Road in downtown east Dearborn.

Located in the new Dearborn Town Center development, the Midwest Medical Center will provide citizens of Dearborn, Detroit and southeast Michigan with comprehensive health care services including: 24-hour walk-in urgent care, primary and multi-specialty medical care, state-of-the-art imaging technologies, and on-site laboratory and pharmacy, operating rooms, enhanced corporate health and occupational medicine programs, as well as a restaurant and retail amenities.

The center will officially open for patient service on Jan. 3, 2011.

"For more than 30 years, Oakwood and Midwest have worked side by side as separate organizations, serving the needs of the residents of southeastern Michigan," said Brian Connolly, president and CEO of Oakwood Healthcare. "Today, by welcoming Midwest to the Oakwood family, we are better able to meet the needs of those who come to us for care. Our patients and the community at large will be well served by this new facility and the advanced technology and specialty services provided here."

Midwest is part of a multi-specialty corporation established by Dr. Mark Saffer in 1981, which was acquired by Oakwood in January 2009. Dr. Saffer, who has been recognized for his innovation of health care delivery models, oversees the day-to-day management of all Midwest facilities and will also lead the new Dearborn center.

"Midwest has changed and grown over the last three decades, but we've always remained true to our mission of providing world-class healthcare to the residents of southeast Michigan," said Dr. Saffer. "Our partnership with Oakwood and the opening of this new state-of-the-art facility will allow us to further this mission and continue to provide the highest level of accessible care for all patients."

The new Midwest Medical Center is one of several components of the new $80 million Dearborn Town Center development project. Oakwood and Redico Development will jointly own the medical office development, which will span more than 125,000 square feet of the development, which also includes a five-level, 530-space public parking structure owned by the city of Dearborn. Future phases of the project include an assisted living facility for seniors and a multi-level building for retail and office space.
