Donation Will Feed Thousands In Metro Detroit

Hiller's Markets has donated 4,000 pounds of chicken has to Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

WWJ's Ron Dewey  spoke with Gleaners Vice President Gerry Brissan says this donation will make it easier for families in need to decide whether to put food on the table or heat their homes this winter.

"In Plymouth alone we distribute 95,000 pounds of food every month. That's a lot of families right here -- in a place you wouldn't even think would need emergency food," Brissan said.

The gift from Hiller's alone will benefit several thousand local families in metro Detroit.

"This is one of the largest donations we've had of this category," said Hiller's Markets Vice President, Justin Hiller.

All the chicken is high quality Amish-grown, according to Len Neive of Hiller's poultry.

"It's something that we could easily sell, but we've decided todonate to the commmunities where they really need it this time of year," Neive said.

The chicken is especially valuable, as fresh meat is not a common donatation to food banks.
