Waterford Man Charged After Standoff With Police

WATERFORD (WWJ) - A 48-year old Waterford Township man has been arraigned on domestic violence charges after a tense standoff with police.

Waterford Township police say Stephen Wethy assaulted his wife, threatened to kill her, and fired a handgun in the air after they argued over money. He fled before police arrived.

Wethy threatened to kill himself after cops caught up with him in Hartland.

Wethy had been drinking and fled in a 2008 silver Jeep Wrangler just prior to officers arriving at his home.

The man asked officers to shoot him, and at one point said he was going to charge the officers to make them shoot him. Officers continued to try and talk him into putting the gun down.

He eventually surrendered after a standoff.

Wethy was arraigned Friday at the 51st District Court in Waterford.

He faces a half-dozen charges; including assault with a dangerous weapon and domestic violence.
