DETROIT (WWJ) - Folks from the local Turkish community are reacting to the news of the earthquake that hit the eastern part of the country.

Nurten Ural is with the Turkish Counsel for Michigan ...  says she is saddened to hear about the earthquake.

Ural says once they assess the damage, they will know what help needs to get sent to the country. "I am sure we will help them whether it is monetary or in-kind," said Ural.

"It reminds us of the 1999 earthquake that hit near Istanbul which killed over 17,000 people," said Ural. "We don't know the exact damage of it right now, we're still assessing the damage but of course many lives have been taken."

Feridun Bek is the President of the Turkish-American Community in Michigan.

"Currently the Turkish government officials are mentioning that they can cope with it," said Bek.
