Is Debate Team For Your Student?

The formal debate is making headlines this fall as Americans watch the Republican candidates verbally volley for the opportunity to be the party's candidate for the U.S. presidency.

Debate clubs at the high school and college level have existed for decades. Student members of debate teams gain confidence in their oral presentation skills by competing in tournaments on the local, state, regional and national level.

Debates follow a format that starts with a topic. One team will take a position in favor and the other team will take the opposite position.

The purpose of the debate is to come up with a good argument in a short amount of time. Teams are judged on the strength of their arguments as well as their rebuttal of the opposing team's argument.

Get a glimpse of the process by tuning in to CNBC at 8 p.m. on November 9 when the Republican candidates debate live at Oakland University.
