The Key To Hangover Prevention Lies In Water

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - It's the holidays and on New Year's Eve, many may overdo the alcohol.

Royal Oak Beaumont ER Dr. Edward Walton said if you chose to consume alcohol, be sure to drink a lot of water during the night to keep the dreaded hangover at bay.

"There are some ways that you can make yourself safer if you're planning to go out and have a good time. You should make sure that  you don't drink on an empty stomach and if you are drinking, try to have a glass of water after every drink," said Walton.

Pairing a glass of water with every alcoholic beverage consumed is key to preventing symptoms associated with hangovers because of dehydration.

"A lot of the symptoms of a hangover are actually related to dehydration and by hydrating while your drinking, it makes you drink a little bit less and it also might prevent the symptoms of a hangover. But again, the best way to prevent a hangover is to not over indulge in the first place," said Walton.

And if you're planning to use those over-the-counter pills while you're drinking, Walton said you're just throwing your money away because they don;t really work. Instead, he suggest eating hardy foods and having a wingman to drive you home.
