Put A Little Punch In Your Paczki; Try It Deep Fried

CANTON TWP. (WWJ) - Metro Detroiters are celebrating Fat Tuesday -- that one last binge before Lent -- and for a lot of us, that means indulging in some paczki.

WWJ's Sandra McNeill stopped at Hayden's Grill and Bar in Canton Township, where they're upping the punch of the traditional treat by dipping them in waffle batter and deep-frying them again.

General Manager Jason Schwedt said they then top the donut in powdered sugar and drizzle it with raspberry or chocolate.

"This one is just one of those things where you've had a rough day and you want to unleash. And that's what we decided we were going to do," said Schwedt.

So how many calories does one have?

"More than I can count on my fingers and toes," he said chuckling. "So, I have not figured out exactly how many but we're going to say that it's upwards of 800, for sure."

The $1.99 deep-fried paczki are the creation of chef Tim Zimmerman and are available only on Fat Tuesday. But if you can't make it to Hayden's by then, they also feature a deep-fried Twinkie and deep-fried Oreos to satisfy your cravings.
