Fire Engulfs Abandoned Building In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A large fire blazed in a residential area in southwest Detroit.

The fire has engulfed a building reported to be abandoned at the I-94 service drive and Ogden near Lonyo.

Lynn Pope works at a hardware store nearby and says so far four fire trucks have responded to the scene.

"It's pretty big, because at first we just saw the smoke, and then all of the sudden it was blazing ... these old houses around here, all it takes is a little bit and that's it," said Pope.

"You walk down the block there must be five to seven houses that are vacant. Whether someone just threw a cigarette, or people are just in there doing drugs, and I don't know it's very crazy - dangerous," said Pope.

"And then the houses are so close together that - there's an abandoned house here and then a beautiful house next door and then that ends up going too."

Pope says she spotted another fire near her home just this past week.

No injuries have been reported in the blaze.
