DETROIT (WWJ) – The Detroit Police Department could soon boast having the best cop in the state of Michigan.

Officer Monica Evans of Local VFW Post 45-53 has been nominated for the annual competition, which is put on by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Evans has been with the department for 8 years and before that was a teacher for 12 years.

She works in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms division … but is most passionate about her work in Youth Violence Prevention.

” …(with) intervention we can redirect those negative behaviors, so encouraging families, parents and young people to understand we all have gifts and talents – so how do we pull that out of them so they don’t feel hopeless,” said Evans.

“I really push for young people because they need our love, our empathy,” added Evans.
