Men Held Without Bond After Fatal Southfield Road Drive-By

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Two of three Detroit men charged with opening fire in broad daylight on the Southfield Service Drive August 14 and killing two teens were arraigned Tuesday in 36th District Court in Detroit.

Demarius Barginere, 19, and Terry Dawson, 20, were sent to jail without bond after police said they shot and killed Tashana Kalka, 19, and Marcus Andrews, 19, while they were traveling in a southbound vehicle.

Their preliminary examinations were scheduled for 9 a.m. September 6 in Detroit's 36th District Court. Cudaro Nelson-Johnson, 24, was expected to be arraigned later Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the trio pulled up next to Kalka and Andrews in a black SUV at 1:50 p.m. so Nelson-Johnson could open fire on the Grand Marquis in which the victims were driving. Barginere is allegedly Kalka's ex-boyfriend; Dawson is alleged to have provided Nelson-Johnson with the firearm prior to the shooting.

"While all violent deaths are tragic, the death of these two young people while driving on a public street during the middle of the day is profoundly disturbing," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "This just adds two more senseless deaths in the landscape that has been killing upon killing in Detroit this year."

All three defendants are charged with two counts of first-degree murder premeditated, which carries a penalty of mandatory life without parole; two counts of assault with intent to murder, which carries a possible life penalty; and felony firearm, a two- year mandatory sentence. Additionally, Nelson-Johnson and Dawson are charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, a five-year felony.
