Non-traditional Career Path Option Explored

Oakland Community College (OCC) is providing a unique opportunity for high school girls to experience non-traditional careers through a course offered this summer. The OCC Womencenter and the Construction Management Program of Oakland Community College, and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) – Detroit Chapter are hosting an exciting, week-long day camp for young women to introduce them to the world of construction. Participating high-school girls will attend camp from July 8 – 12 at OCC's Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills.
Mentoring a Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Camp will provide information and hands-on experience in a wide range of construction-related fields taught by local women employed in the construction industry. Students will gain knowledge and practice in areas such as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, and masonry, and will build a small frame house on campus.
In addition, campers will practice with a crane and forklift, and create construction-related functional projects to take home. Hardhats, safety goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment are provided. At the conclusion of the camp, each camper will receive a Tomboy Tools® toolkit. A recognition completion reception will be held on Friday, July 20 for the campers, their families, MAGIC Camp staff, OCC and NAWIC representatives and camp sponsors.
The MAGIC Camp experience is free to registered students, thanks to the generous donations of the local construction industry and community partners, including The Rochester Women's Fund, Home Depot, PAT Engineering, Harley Ellis Devereaux, AUCH General Contractors, Busch's Fresh Food Market, AAUW Waterford Chapter, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Plumbers Local 98, Operating Engineers Local 324, International Masonry Institute, UAW, the National Association of Women in Construction, and Oakland Community College.
