Conferences Aim To Protect Senior Citizens From Theft, Fraud

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two conferences are coming to metro Detroit next week to help prevent theft and fraud against senior citizens.

It's part of a national tour called "Safeguarding the Golden Generation" and features a 22-minute documentary, "The Last Will and Embezzlement."

Filmmaker, Pamela Glasner produced the piece based on her own family's tragedy. Glasner said a man befriended her father, who had Alzheimer's disease, and eventually walked away with all his money and property when her dad died.

"We focus on what people can do. I mean, we certainly do tell people what can happen, but we really focus on what to look for, what the signs are in terms of potential abuse, exploitation signs and what people can do to prevent it," she said.

The conferences are Sept. 25th at the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township and Sept. 30th at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts in West Bloomfield Township.

Both events will include keynote addresses from each township's supervisor as well as audience Q&A sessions and panel discussions, featuring dedicated professionals in the fields of elder care and elder protection.
