Sheriff: Outhouse Bombed At Sleeping Bear Dunes

TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ/AP) - The Leelanau County Sheriff's Department says an outdoor toilet has been severely damaged by a bomb at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in northwestern Michigan.

Sheriff Mike Borkovich says it apparently happened early Sunday morning. He says someone reported hearing an explosion, but deputies didn't immediately find anything. Later in the day, someone reported damage to the outhouse at the School Lake boat launch.

Borkovich says technicians with the FBI and the Michigan State Police determined that a bomb had been placed in or next to the outhouse, located in Cleveland Township.

He tells The Associated Press he can't provide any immediate details about the device. He says no one was injured.

Damage is estimated at $14,000.

The National Park Service is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information on the persons responsible for the explosion are asked to contact the NPS or the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office at 231-256-8800 or the Confidential Tipline at 231-256-8696.  Email information should be sent to tips@co.leelanau.mi.us.

The launch site has been reopened for public use.
