Farmington Hills Native Jena Irene Brings 'American Idol' Winner Caleb Johnson To Prom

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Fresh off of the Hollywood stage, "American Idol" runner-up Jena Irene of Farmington Hills came home to celebrate her senior prom with a special date along for the ride.

Big-voiced rocker Caleb Johnson, who won the TV singing competition, joined Irene at the North Farmington High School prom Wednesday night at Dearborn Inn.

"He's an awesome date. I mean, we've been best friends for a couple of months now so to actually bring him to prom and to bring him to meet all my friend, it's kind of cool," Irene told WWJ's Jon Hewett.

Irene, 17, said she and Johnson, 23, formed a special bond throughout the competition, so bringing him along as her date was a no-brainer.

"It was a joke at first. My mom was joking about it and I was like 'Huh, that could be fun.' And then we ended up being the last two so I'm like, 'Do you want to just go to prom together,' and he's like 'Alright, lets do it,' and it happened," she said.

While Johnson is off to Los Angeles later this week to cut his first album, Irene said she'll be "laying low" ahead of graduation next month.

"Throughout these next couple of weeks, I'm excited to just kind of hang out and chill with my friends and definitely rest and watch a lot of Netflix before tour. So, other than that, I'm just excited to rest and get ready for the tour because it's going to be an awesome summer," she said.

Irene was referring to the 27-city "American Idol Tour" -- which has a stop scheduled on June 27 at Caesars Windsor.
