DETROIT (WWJ) - Can you get the benefits of gastric bypass surgery without actually going under the knife?

"It was so real to me that I actually smelled the operating room," said metro Detroiter Barbara Cox, describing her experience with gastric bypass hypnosis.

Back in 2013, Cox, a widowed mother of two, weighed 345 pounds at her heaviest.

"I definitely was addicted to food," Cox told WWJ Health  Reporter Sean Lee — and that food addiction was taking its toll.

At 63,  Cox was diabetic, had asthma and kidney problems, and had such severe knee problems, she was in a wheelchair.

That's when she saw a special on gastric bypass hypnosis performed by hypnotherapist Rena Greenberg.

"On a conscious level they know they're not really having the surgery, but it can feel exactly as if they did," Greenberg said.

Just over a year later, Cox is 97 pounds lighter, no longer has asthma and her blood sugar is normal.
