Flint Schools Make Payroll Thanks To Last-Minute Grant
FLINT (AP) - The discovery of $1.3 million for an after-school grant allowed the Flint School District to pay its teachers and staff this week.
The Flint Journal reports Friday, the district had been planning to ask for a loan against its state aid to make payroll. That was before the district discovered the existence of the funds. They had been withheld from the 21st Century grant, which pays for after-school programs for low-income students who attend low-performing schools.
Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says the money was released from the state and hit the Flint School District's books on Monday.
The debt-ridden district has closed buildings, outsourced jobs and laid off teachers to trim costs.
