Littlefield Named Major League Scout
DETROIT - The Tigers today announced that Dave Littlefield has been named as a major league scout, replacing Mike Russell.
"We're pleased to add Dave Littlefield to our organization as a major league scout," said David Dombrowski, Tigers President, CEO and General Manager. "Dave brings years of scouting and baseball experience and will be a solid complement to our baseball operations department."
Littlefield, 54, has spent more than 25 seasons within front offices of major league clubs, most recently wrapping up a seven-season stint as a major league scout for the Chicago Cubs. Prior to joining the Cubs in 2007, Littlefield spent seven seasons as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before joining the Pirates, Littlefield was the Assistant General Manager to David Dombrowski with the Florida Marlins, a position he had held since November 6, 1998. He was promoted to a vice president with the Marlins on March 6, 2000.
Littlefield began his MLB career with three seasons in the Tigers organization as an area scout and East Coast Scouting Supervisor before joining the Montreal Expos in 1991 as a National Crosschecker and East Coast Supervisor. Within the Expos system, Littlefield climbed to director of player development, a position he held for his final three seasons with the organization before joining the Marlins in 1998.
Prior to his front office career in the majors, Littlefield served as an assistant baseball coach for three seasons at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts, followed by three seasons in the same capacity at Clemson University. Littlefield played baseball and football at UMass, was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a minor league free agent and caught for three years in the Phillies and Yankees farm systems.
