CBS DETROIT - Michigan freshman Jabrill Peppers will sit out the rest of the season, head coach Brady Hoke announced Wednesday.

Hoke said Peppers will not need surgery and that the defensive back will be ready in time for spring practice, according to MLive.

Having played only three games this season - and none in the second half - Peppers qualifies for a medical redshirt, which means this season will not count against his four years of eligibility. A highly coveted recruit who was expected to start as a freshman, Peppers has not played since the Utah game on Sept. 20.

Peppers suffered an ankle injury against Appalachian State, but a different leg injury has been the one from which Peppers has yet to rebound.

"We were very excited about what he brings, from an attitude standpoint to explosiveness he had, the athleticism, the makeup speed, all the things that made him one of the most recruited guys in this country," Hoke said, per MLive. "His football intelligence was at a high level, as were his instincts ... He could've played all three positions."
