Woman Killed By SMART Bus While Crossing Street

TROY (WWJ) - Police say a woman was killed when she was hit by a SMART bus while trying to cross the street.

The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday near Maplelawn Drive and Crooks Road.

According to police, the woman was attempting to walk across Maplelawn Drive in the crosswalk when she was struck by the bus, which was turning onto Maplelawn from Crooks.

Investigators say it appears the bus driver just didn't see the woman. Traffic signals at the intersection were flashing yellow at the time and street lights were working, police said.

The victim's name isn't being released at this time because her family hasn't been notified, although police said she is in her 30s.

It wasn't immediately clear if the bus driver will be suspended or face any other type of action.

An investigation is ongoing.
