Suspects Evade Police After Chase Tops Speeds Of 100 MPH

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - The search is on for a group of suspects who escaped police during a chase through Macomb County where speeds reportedly reached 115 miles an hour.

Chesterfield Township police say the situation unfolded early Wednesday morning after a robbery was reported at Jenuwine's Tobacco Barn near 21 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue.

Officers responding to the scene attempted to stop a Cadillac Escalade with four people inside, but the SUV refused to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle for over 15 miles, at time traveling speeds over 100 mph.

Officials eventually called off the chase near Groesbeck Highway and I-696 in Warren. No further details have been released.

An employee at the tobacco shop told WWJ's Mike Campbell the suspects jimmied the lock on the front entrance and stole merchandise, including several boxes of cigarettes. The employee said the store has a good video surveillance system, which recorded the crime.

An investigation is ongoing.

The chase involved officers from Chesterfield, Sterling Heights and Warren police departments, as well as Michigan State Police.
