$2.5K Reward Offered For Tips In Detroit Hit-And-Run Death

DETROIT (WWJ) - Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the driver who struck and killed a Detroit man who was walking home from a bar on the city's east side.

Calvin "Poonie" Rutherford, 37, was killed at the intersection of Mount Eliot and Outer Drive, just after 12 a.m. on January 3, 2015.

His friend, Mary Coco, says Rutherford had just graduated from a technology program and was about to open a business and didn't deserve what happened to him.

"I've never met anyone more loving, with the biggest heart. He had no hate in his blood at all," Coco said. "We had been such good friends for so long, and he did not deserve this."

"You know, we all make mistakes, and he finally got his life on track, got hired, he was on his way; has a new baby on the way," she said.

Anyone with information about this crime can submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-SPEAK UP (1-800-773-2587), going online to www.1800speakup.org or texting "CSM" and tip information to CRIMES (274637).

Tips received before midnight Tuesday, June 16, will be worth an extra $1,000.
