Holiday Terrorism? State Police Want Citizens To Be On The Lookout This Fourth Of July

LANSING (WWJ) -- Independence Day is here and Michigan State Police are asking you to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior.

MSP says there are no known terrorist threats to Michigan at this time, but people should remain vigilant, with recent incidents in France, Kuwait and Tunisia serving as reminders.

Lt. Mike Shaw says that people should still pay attention to their surroundings.

"While there is an uptick in some of the Federal law enforcement activity, there is no real threat that's known to Michigan at this time," Shaw said. "But we are telling people that they play a role, also, in keeping our community safe and if they see something that appears out-of-place to give us a call."

Special Transportation Security Administration teams are being assigned to large airline hubs in some states.

"[Citizens] are our eyes and ears,"Shaw said. "They're the ones who really report some of the things that happen in our communities. What we don't want to happen is we don't want people to avoid travel or not go to the fireworks or not enjoy the whole Fourth of July holiday."

Residents should take note of suspicious activity such as unattended packages or objects that seem out-of-place, or people who leave an area quickly when approached.

Anyone who see something suspicious should call 911 immediately.
