DETROIT (WWJ) – The Grosse Pointe Park businessman who was sentenced to life in prison in the murder of his wife is asking for a new trial.

A hearing has been scheduled for mid-September, after Bob Bashara filed a motion blaming his two attorneys for failing to properly represent him.

In 2014, Bashara was found guilty of murder and conspiracy in connection with the death of his wife, Jane Bashara.

Attorney Michael McCarthy says he and the other attorney, Lillian Diallo, will be at the hearing.

“When an appellant says I told my lawyer to call this witness, or I showed him this piece of evidence I had – whatever that might be – if it’s not a matter of record in the trial court already, the only way the Court of Appeals can address it by having the record expanded in the trail court to address those issues. So that’s the reason we are holding this hearing.”

Bashara is expected to give testimony, along with the two attorneys of record,  at the September 15 evidentiary hearing.

In the motion, Bashara blames his attorneys for failing “to follow his suggestions on motions to file, witnesses to call,” and address questions he thought should be asked.
