Michigan's Great Lakes 'Unmistakable' In Photo From Space

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - We all know the Great Lakes make Michigan stand out on the map  — but the same holds true from space.

Astronaut Scott Kelly Monday morning tweeted a shining shot of Michigan snapped from the International Space Station, in which he says the lakes are "unmistakable" even in darkness. The metro Detroit area sparkles as well — an obvious bright spot.

By afternoon, Kelly's popular post had already garnered thousands of retweets and likes.

In a tweet later in the day, Kelly also gave props to South Africa, which he said always has "a way of showing something beautiful."  (That's nice, too, we suppose).

How does one tweet from space? according to NASA, Internet service at the space station is powered by "a network of tracking and data relay satellites."

That may sound neat, but the downside is it's snail slow. Kelly says connection speeds from the space station are "worse than what dial-up was like."
