Bills Will Let Emergency Contact Info Be Encoded In Driver's Licenses, ID Cards

LANSING (AP) — Legislation going to Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature will let Michigan residents have their emergency contact information digitally encoded in their driver's license or state ID.

The bills are intended to help paramedics or police responding to an accident quickly identify a victim's emergency contact. Supporters say it also will comfort to families of people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

The legislation won final approval from the House Wednesday.

It requires the secretary of state, in conjunction with the state police, to develop and implement a system by 2017 to obtain emergency contact info voluntarily from those with a driver's license or state ID card.
