Detroit Man Tasered, Pepper Sprayed After Alleged Assault On Cop During Brawl

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 20-year-old man was tasered and pepper sprayed by police when he allegedly resisted arrest following a brawl in Detroit.

The suspect is jailed on multiple charges, including alcohol consumption by a minor and assault on a police officer, in connection with the incident late Wednesday afternoon, in the 19000-block of Shields.

Michigan State Police troopers, called to assist Detroit police officers with a "large fight involving weapons," arrived to find multiple people running around and yelling with police attempting to detain others.

When Detroit police pointed out a young man as a suspect in a possible assault, troopers tried to make an arrest.  When the suspect resisted, State Police said, troopers tried to use a taser on him, but it was ineffective. Next, they used OC/CS spray, and were able to take the man into custody.

They suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries sustained in the fight, and then transferred to an MSP post where he was processed on five warrants and jailed.

There were no details immediately available about the alleged assault on the police officer.

The suspect's name is being withheld pending an arrangement.

An investigation is ongoing.
