Black History: Detroit Author Brings History To Life

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Ken Coleman's mantra is "history lives."

The former radio producer, newsman and political consultant -- who used to read old Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons newspaper boxscores as a kid -- was drawn to history.

"Now, I've been a professional for 25 years," Coleman said. "Lots of those people who I've met 25 years ago are really historic figures, whether they're still with us or not. I think all along the way in my life, there were sort of glimpses chronicling African-American history. Detroit has been something that I was sort of destined to do."

Coleman has written three books so far throughout his career. Coleman's second installment, Million Dollars Worth Of Nerve, tells the story of Detroit's influential Black Bottom and Paradise Valley communities.

"That book tells the story of those two communities through the eyes of 21 notable people who I've written profiles on," Coleman said. "It runs the gamut."

Coleman said says his work is not just for black people.

"It's important that we know our history, but equally important, I think the books are for everybody," Coleman said. "I think that Detroit's history -- Detroit's black history is Detroit's history."

WWJ celebrates Black History month this year by highlighting local outstanding African-Americans who inspire others. Tune in for the reports throughout the day at: 6:20 a.m., 10:40 a.m., 3:40 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
