Suspect Smashes Through Door, Steals Puppy From Pet Shop

YPSILANTI TWP. (WWJ) - The search is on for a puppy stolen from a Ypsilanti Township pet shop.

Police say the theft occurred sometime between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday at Pet City Pets on Ecorse Road just west of Harris Road.

According to police, someone smashed through the front door and stole a black male Yorkie-Poo puppy.

Shop owner Stu Collins said it appears the sole purpose of the burglary was to steal the puppy. Nothing else was touched and cash was still in the drawer of the register.

"There were 15 puppies here and they only took the one," Collins said. "He's almost all black with just a little bit of white on his chest."

Collins said the puppy came from a littler of five and a family was already lined up to buy him.

"They actually came in right after the police left and they wanted him," said Collins. "But they ended up taking home another puppy instead."

Collins said they're holding out hope the puppy will be found safe but the more time passes, the more their fears grow.

"My wife was crying all day," he said. "We know the lady who breeds these puppies. Once a year she gets a littler and we get the whole litter and, you know, she's heartbroken."

At this time, police have no suspect leads.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 734-971-8400.
