Detroit Man Extradited From Alabama, Charged In Deadly Shooting At Melvindale Play Center

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 23-year-old man suspected of killing another man at a children's play center in Melvindale as part of an ongoing feud between families has been officially charged in the case.

Lamar Alexander Carter was arraigned Thursday at the 24th District Court in Allen Park on charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm in the death of 44-year-old Sean Allen Key.

Carter surrendered to authorities in Alabama late last month after he was named as a suspect in the shooting, which took place February 13 during a fight at Play Atlantis in Melvindale.

According to police, the shooting broke out as a children's birthday party was underway. Investigators say the two families had been feuding for months, and both just happened to be in the same place at the same time.

A shooting death in Detroit and an arson are also related to the longtime fight, according to police.

Carter was ordered held without bond. He's due back in court for a probable cause conference on March 18, and a preliminary exam on April 1.
