US Navy Naming Destroyer After Former Sen. Carl Levin

DETROIT (AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin will have a naval destroyer named after him.

The Navy says a naming ceremony is scheduled Monday along the Detroit riverfront at the General Motors Renaissance Center.

The destroyer is part of the Arleigh Burke class.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will attend Monday's ceremony.

Levin tells The Associated Press Tuesday in an email that he's known for months that a ship would be named after him and calls it a "truly wonderful honor."

The Detroit Democrat served in the Senate from 1979 to 2015. He did not seek re-election.

Levin also served as chair of the Senate's Armed Services Committee. He currently is senior counsel at a Detroit law firm and chair of the Levin Center at Wayne State University's Law School.
