Frozen Vegetables Sold At Costco, Meijer Recalled Due To Listeria Contamination

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Fifteen varieties of frozen vegetables sold at Costco and Meijer stores have been recalled due to possibly dangerous bacterial contamination.

Washington-based CRF Frozen Foods says the organic peas, sweet corn and mixed veggies were distributed to retailers and distribution centers in 35 states, including Michigan, and in Canada.

The recall covers certain True Goodness by Meijer, Wellsley Farms Organic, Organic By Nature and Schwan's brand. (Scroll down for more detailed information).

The company said that although no illnesses have been reported to date, the recall was set in motion after Listeria monocytogenes were discovered in one lot of corn and one lot of peas through routine testing by state health officials in Ohio.

Listeria organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Those who purchased these products are urged not to eat them and to either throw them away or return them to the store of purchase for a refund.
