Man Convicted Again In Half Brother's Death Awaits Sentence

PAW PAW (WWJ/AP) - A man who got a new trial after being convicted in the death of his half brother in southwestern Michigan is awaiting sentencing after being convicted again.

A Van Buren County last week convicted 37-year-old Antonio Lewis of second-degree murder in the death of Ivory Shaver, according to The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph. Sentencing is set for June 13.

The state Supreme Court last year declined to take an appeal from prosecutors in Lewis' case. He had earlier been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Shaver, whose body was found in a rural ditch in Van Buren County in 2012.

The appeals court overturned the conviction, saying Lewis' rights were violated when he wasn't allowed to represent himself after the trial started.

According to reports, prosecutors said the motive in the slaying was retaliation. Lewis was apparently upset because Shaver had assisted in a Child Protective Services investigation targeted at him.
