Court Hearing Over Detroit Teacher Sick-Outs Rescheduled

DETROIT (AP) — A hearing has been rescheduled on a lawsuit filed by the Detroit Public Schools after teachers called out sick earlier this year, closing dozens of schools.

The hearing is set for next Monday morning, when parties in the case will speak with a judge in a telephone conference. A hearing was originally scheduled for noon Monday in Detroit.

Dozens of teachers called out sick Jan. 20 to protest pay, overcrowded classrooms and poor conditions in some schools, forcing the district to close more than 85 of its 97 schools.

The Detroit Federation of Teachers union urged sick-outs this month that closed 94 schools amid fear the district wouldn't be able to pay some teachers this summer.

Teacher strikes are illegal in Michigan.
