Hundreds Of Firearms Traded In At Detroit 'Cash For Caliber' Gun Buy Back [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - Organizers are calling it a huge success -- hundreds of firearms are now off Detroit streets, thanks to the "Cash for Caliber" buy back program, sponsored by Judge Greg Mathis.

Hundreds of people lined up outside the Mathis Community Center in northwest Detroit to turn in their guns in exchange for a monetary reward -- $50 per firearm -- no questions asked.

Just a few hours into the program, roughly 450 guns had already been collected.

One man, who did not want to be named, called the program a blessing.

"I brought a 38 special back. I didn't need it, I didn't figure it'd be any use to me," the man told WWJ's Laura Bonnell. "We found it in my father-in-law's house, he passed away, so I figured we'd turn it in. Didn't want it to get out there in the street anywhere."

Citizens can bring as many firearms as they want, but they can only receive a reward up to $150.

The collected guns will be melted down and made into jewelry.

The event runs until 5 p.m. Saturday.
