Detroit Receives First Streetcar For New Light Rail System

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The first streetcar for Detroit's new light rail system has arrived.

The QLINE streetcar was delivered Tuesday night, nearly two months ahead of initial projections. Final assembly and mechanical checks will be completed over the next few weeks before the streetcar makes its first appearance on Woodward Avenue.

The three-piece streetcars are each 66 feet long and will carry an average of 125 passengers per car. Five other cars are expected to be delivered by the end of the year.

Passenger operations are scheduled to start in spring 2017. The $140 million project will extend 3.3 miles north along Woodward from downtown.
