Woman Killed In Overnight Fire At Mobile Home Park

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities say one person was killed and two emergency workers were injured after a fire took off inside a mobile home in western Oakland County.

Fire crews responded to the Highland Greens Estates mobile home park, off Milford Road just north of M-59 in Highland Township, around 9 p.m. Friday after receiving a call about smoke coming from a home in the 1200 block of Steward Court.

Witnesses stated the resident was still inside the home and in the area of the fire, and a rescue team was quickly deployed. On entry, crew found heavy heat and thick flames coming from the bedroom.

The resident was located within five minutes of the initial arrival, according to officials, and rushed to the hospital. Despite all efforts, she could not be revived and was declared dead.

Two emergency personnel suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation while assisting the rescue team with the victim. Both were treated and released.

The fire, which was contained to one room, is currently ruled "unintentional," but due to the severity of injuries sustained, further investigation has been turned over to the Oakland County Sheriff's office.

Crews remained on the scene until about 1 a.m. Saturday. An investigation is ongoing.
