WASHINGTON TWP. (WWJ) – Authorities are investigating after an apparent hit list was found on the computers at a Macomb County middle school.

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 10 a.m. Friday to Powell Middle School, along Jewell Road between 28 Mile and 29 Mile roads in Washington Township, to meet with the principal regarding “suspicious information” found on the schools computers.

“We were informed about a website that was created by a student from Powell Middle School,” Captain David Daniels told WWJ’s Zahra Huber. “On the website, where multiple students could make comments, there is a — I’ll call it a blog if you will, where there’s a list of names where they’re listing individuals, celebrities, poets, politicians and other students that could be harmed.”

Investigators from the sheriff’s detective bureau and the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement (MACE) team responded to the school and are currently investigating the validity of these threats.

“Our MACE team came out to the school and are interviewing the individual who created the website,” said Daniels. “The school and the parents are being cooperative. The students are still in school, they’re being cooperative.”

At this time, Daniels said there is no specific threat to anyone.

“The school is not on lockdown. There’s no danger in that type of scenario right now,” he said. “We don’t think there’s any imminent danger to anyone at this point.”

Nonetheless, officials are still taking the situation seriously.

“What students and most people need to understand is when you post something on social media, it cannot always be ignored. It can’t be brushed to the side, so we have to investigate the posting and make sure we can create a safe environment for our citizens at the schools,” said Daniels. “Think about what you’re posting before you hit that send button.”

At this point, Daniels said there’s no plans for student suspensions or criminal charges.

An investigation is ongoing.

Powell Middle School is located within the Romeo Community Schools district.
