Three reasons Steve Yzerman had to take the general manager’s position in Tampa Bay:
1. Ken Holland isn’t going anywhere. He is the top general manager in the NHL, and perhaps all of professional team sports. And he is still in his prime.
2. After leading Canada to the gold medal in the Olympics last winter, Yzerman’s stock will never be higher, and he got the offer he couldn’t refuse.
3. Yzerman paid his dues in the Red Wings’ front office, learning from the best. It was time to spread his own wings.
