700 Pink Slips For Wayne County Workers

Layoffs will begin this Wednesday for about 700 workers of Wayne County's American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said the county has to balance its budget and the most recent concession proposal was rejected.

"We have to go to the one-week layoffs for three weeks, and then there will be 200 permanent layoffs," Ficano said.  He said they don't have any options.

"The dispute is over the benefits and how they're affected because of the layoffs," Ficano said.

"Unfortunately, AFSCME turned down the one contract we thought was very reasonable.  Seventy percent of all the other unions have already participated, they've taken a cut," he said.
