Mich. Troops Afghanistan-Bound

A small team from the Michigan Army National Guard is leaving for training in Mississippi before being sent to Afghanistan.

Soldiers from the Lansing-based 1999th Contingency Contracting Team leave Monday for Camp Shelby. After they receive specialized training, they expect to spend a year in Afghanistan where they'll handle contracting in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The team consists of four soldiers familiar with fiscal and contract law; federal, defense, and Army acquisition regulations and procurement policy; and the use and accountability of appropriated funds.

More than 800 Michigan National Guard soldiers and airmen currently are deployed outside the state.
