Tutors Helping DPS Students Prepare For MEAP

Starting this morning, Detroit Public School students in grades four through seven will be participating in a week-long series of classes designed to prepare them for the MEAP tests that take place just two weeks after the start of school.

Members of three Detroit locals belonging to the American Federation of Teachers are joining forces to tutor the students.

Organizers say parents are also an important part of the program. Tutors will be giving pointers to the parents on how to help their children study for the MEAP test, including how to work with the kids on the reading and writing portion of the test.

Parents still have time to register their kids for the literacy camp. Registration starts at 9:00 this morning. Classes begin at 10. It's being held at the Detroit Federation of Teachers headquarters on West Grand Boulevard.
