Days-Old Infant Attacked By Family Dog

A 4-day old Waterford Township boy is expected to be okay after he was attacked by his family's pit bull.

Sergeant Robert Gaynette said they responded to the scene on Aquarina Street near West Walton Wednesday afternoon, finding the child injured.

"The grandfather of the 4-day old boy was holding the baby. The family's pit bull, for no reason, basically jumped up and bit the boy one time on the head, on the top of his head," Gaynette told WWJ Newsradio 950.

The grandfather was able to push the pit bull mix away from the baby, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He's expected to be able to go home on Thursday.

The dog, which belonged to the boy's father, has been put down.

The community has banned pit bulls since 1989. Gaynette said the family had recently moved to Waterford and was not familiar with the ordinance.

The case is being turned over to the prosecutor's office.
