New Home, Hope For Detroit Family

A family burned out during the recent rash of fires in Detroit has received the keys to a new home thanks to the generosity of a small businessman.

Willie Banks and Wanda Gatlan received the keys to their new home on Beconsfield on Thursday.

The couple never dreamed they'd be standing on the porch of a brick bungaloo, keys in hand, just two weeks after their house went up in flames.

The home was made possible by local businessman Jon Grabowski, president of Precise Associates.

"The Banks are my neighbors, because I'm a Detroiter and they're Detroiters. And, as Mr. Banks said, anything that local businesses can do to support our community and support our neighbors...I felt that if this happened to me, as a Detroiter, that I would want somebody to reach out and help me, Grabowski said,

The couple, and one child, will live in the home.

"When I found out that we was getting a new house, I cried happy tears. I was like wow, there's actually people out there in the world who helps people out in need," Gatlan said.

The family will live in the home rent-free until November. Banks starts his new construction job on Monday, also thanks to Grabowski.
